U.S. Anesthesia, Respiratory, and Sleep Apnea Markets See Growth

According to a new report by iData Research (Vancouver, BC, Canada), the United States market for anesthesia, respiratory, and sleep management devices will surpass $4 billion by 2015.

The large, rapidly growing market for sleep apnea devices will represent nearly 50% of this value. Other sectors in this market include anesthesia delivery systems, anesthesia monitoring systems, anesthesia information management systems (AIMS), level of consciousness monitoring, anesthesia disposables, ventilators, nebulizers, intubation endoscopes, respiratory disposables, oxygen therapy, and sleep diagnostic systems. Of these, the market for anesthesia management systems is estimated to be the fastest growing, with growth driven by usage in hospital suites outside of the operating room, including obstetrics and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The report also states that of the 18 million adults in the United States who suffer from sleep apnea, over 85% are undiagnosed; this is expected to change as insurance reimbursement improves and general awareness of the condition increases.

"The markets for anesthesia and respiratory capital equipment declined significantly in 2008 and 2009, due to hospital and surgery center budget constraints resulting from the economic recession,” said Kamran Zamanian, Ph.D., CEO of iData. "Other markets such as sleep management devices have also been hit hard; however, these markets are estimated to recover over the forecast period.”

The report also provides a comprehensive analysis of anesthesia delivery units and monitors, level of consciousness monitors, AIMS, anesthesia disposables, ventilators, nebulizers, laryngoscopes, respiratory disposables, oxygen therapy, sleep therapy, and diagnostic devices. Some of the major manufacturers in these markets include Philips Respironics (Pittsburgh, PA, USA), ResMed, General Electric (GE, Chalfont St. Giles, United Kingdom), Covidien, and Draeger, with a total of over 40 million units of general, local, and regional anesthesia delivered to patients in the United States each year.
