Nonscarring Alternative to Conventional Breast Reduction

A recent study reports on the use of tumescent liposuction as a nonscarring alternative to conventional breast reduction surgery, resulting in the shrinkage of the skin and ligaments in the breast area. The study was published in the American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery (2001;18[1]).

Problems resulting from traditional reduction methods, such as extreme scarring and reduced nipple sensation, can deter patients from having the procedure. In all cases of the current study, shrinkage of the breast tissue after liposuction was evident, and there was a slight elevation of the nipples to reflect the tissue contraction. After healing was complete, the breast returned to a natural, soft state. No cases in the study reported a loss of sensation of the nipple, and patients achieved the desired reduction without substantial scarring.

"The liposuction technique for breast reduction is a method that is gaining popularity, but it is not universally accepted by the medical community or the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACCS),” says Robert F. Jackson, president-elect of the AACCS. Liposuction may have a place in breast reduction methods, but it is important that patients discuss all options with a physician since the traditional reduction procedure remains the gold standard, he advises.
