Severe allergic reactions can escalate rapidly and require prompt epinephrine, yet many at-risk patients do not consistently carry their auto-injector. More...

With food allergies affecting an estimated 220 million people worldwide, reliable access during anaphylaxis remains a critical need. A new device concept now integrates an epinephrine auto-injector with a smartphone to help address this gap.

Sempresto, Inc., a medical device company focused on expanding access to emergency medications, announced that its smartphone-integrated epinephrine auto-injector concept has received a 2026 Red Dot Design Award. Developed with Sagentia Medical, the concept is designed to address a persistent barrier in anaphylaxis care: immediate access to medication when it is needed. The Red Dot jury recognized the design for its innovation, functionality, usability, and aesthetic quality.

The device concept enables easy attachment of a compact epinephrine auto‑injector to a smartphone, leveraging the fact that people are far less likely to leave their phone behind than a conventional auto‑injector. By integrating emergency medication into an item already carried throughout the day, the approach seeks to improve availability without altering the underlying therapy. The concept is positioned to address real‑world behavior that contributes to delays in epinephrine administration.

Sagentia Medical contributed industrial design, user experience development, instructions for use, internal mechanism design, and functional testing of the safety and injection mechanisms during prototype development. These activities focused on emergency‑use reliability and clarity of operation. The collaboration aimed to translate the concept into a practical form factor suitable for urgent, single‑use deployment.

The recognition is described as a milestone as Sempresto advances development of a broader smartphone‑integrated emergency medication platform. Beyond epinephrine, the company’s vision includes connected rescue medications designed to improve access, adherence, and patient outcomes. The Red Dot Design Award is one of the world’s largest design competitions, with winners selected by an international jury that evaluates entries on innovation, functionality, quality, and overall design excellence.

“At Sempresto, we are driven by a singular mission: ensuring that life-saving medications are available when and where they are needed most. This recognition from Red Dot validates our belief that thoughtful, human-centered design can help solve critical healthcare challenges. We are honored to receive this award and grateful to the Sagentia Medical team for helping bring this vision to life,” said Elizabeth Reczek, Ph.D., CEO and co-founder of Sempresto.
