A new partnership between Plexus Information Systems (Plexus IS, Boston, MA, USA) and Codonics (Cleveland, OH, USA) will improve the anesthesia process in the operating room (OR).

According to the agreement, both companies will co-market the Codonics Safe Label System (SLS) with Plexus IS Anesthesia Touch and Pharmacy Touch anesthesia information-management systems (AIMS) as a fully integrated solution. The Codonics SLS helps to eliminate medication-labeling errors using visual and audible electronic safety checks, ensuring consistency every time a medication is prepared. The SLS prints medication labels, intravenous (IV) line labels, invasive monitor lines, and other OR needs on demand.

Using the integrated solution, a single scan of the medication vial label triggers an on-board formulary to confirm the medication electronically, immediately producing a full-color compliant medication label. Simultaneously, the medication dispense transaction is recorded, seamlessly updating Pharmacy's inventory counts and controlled substance tracking. When anesthesia is ready to deliver the medication to the patient, a quick wave of the labeled syringe past the barcode scanner triggers documentation in Anesthesia Touch, including real-time safety checks and automated pharmacy charging.

“Codonics and Plexus IS systems work together seamlessly to remove the element of human error while improving the anesthetists' workflow,” said Peter Botten, president and CEO at Codonics. “Our single login, single scan integration enables users to remove a medication from the anesthesia cart, instantly produce a compliant, barcoded label, report the usage to pharmacy, and document it in the patient's record using the label's barcode.”

“Our philosophy of providing solution-based technologies is underscored by this new business relationship with Codonics. The breadth of our anesthesia product line is further enhanced through the addition of the Codonics Safe Label System,” said John Pearson, vice president of sales and marketing at Plexus IS. “Both companies focus on creating products that permit ease of use in very complex environments – a philosophy that provides straightforward user interfaces to full featured applications and devices.”
