An advanced radiology information system (RIS) has been modified for radiology groups reading for multiple client facilities, to enhance exam management for its freestanding imaging center and teleradiology practice.

Capital Radiology (Sheridan, WY, USA) has selected RIS Concepts, Inc.'s (Miami, FL, USA) RAD-RIS, for their practice. According to radiologists from Capital Radiology, prior to implementing the new RIS, the practice had been managing reporting and billing with manual, paper-based processes and needed a more efficient system because it recently experienced a significant increase in exam volume.

"RIS Concepts allowed us to replace several software products and manual processes for dictation and transcription," explained Roxanne Trevola, administrative manager for Capital Radiology. "In addition to enhanced report turnaround time, the application will provide online exam ordering for our teleradiology clients. The built-in dictation and transcription module can automatically fax reports to both clients and their referring physicians."

Capital believes the new automation and web-based architecture will support additional growth because the group will be able to work efficiently with additional offsite radiologists to support an expanded exam volume. "In the future, we are looking to enhance our system's functionality with a RIS Concepts' HL7 integration feature that will enable information to flow directly from RAD-RIS into our billing software," Mr. Trevola said.

The Web-based system provides a range of innovative features to support streamlined workflow. The RCI product family consists of flagship enterprise RCI-RIS, a browser-based multi-facility application that supports a comprehensive range of advanced RIS features such as real-time scheduling, dictation, transcription, patient demographics, document scanning, and billing. RCI-RIS also offers a proprietary HL7 engine, providing economic and efficient integration with other healthcare information technology (IT) applications.

Also available is new RAD-RIS, an advanced w\Web-based workflow application customized for the unique needs of radiology groups reading studies for multiple client facilities. The new RAD-RIS creates an innovative integrated work list, combining studies across multiple enterprises and locations, while simultaneously interfacing picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) in use at different hospital and clinics. It also features a client billing component, providing radiology groups with a complete business solution.
