In a move to increase the functionality of its Lifepak 20 defibrillator/monitor, Medtronic Physio-Control (Redmond, WA, USA) has made an agreement with the supplier of Signal Extraction Technology (SET) for pulse oximetry to incorporate the SET technology into the Lifepak. Financial details were not disclosed.

The SET technology was developed by Masimo Corp. (Irvine, CA, USA). Studies have demonstrated that SET pulse oximetry substantially overcomes the limitations of conventional pulse oximeters in accurately measuring arterial blood oxygen saturation levels and pulse rates in the presence of patient movement and low perfusion, says the company. To date, Masimo has licensed the technology to more than 35 international patient monitor system providers.

The Lifepak 20 defibrillator/monitors are used in emergency rooms, intensive care, cardiac care, and electrophysiology labs for saving the lives of people suffering from sudden cardiac arrest. Lifepaks offer both manual and automated external defibrillator (AED) functions. Medtronic Physio-Control selected the SET pulse oximetry because it provides accurate readings and fewer false alarms of dangerous saturation levels, according to the company.

"Masimo SET pulse oximetry has been clinically proven superior under the most challenging patient conditions, for which Medtronic Physio-Control products are designed,” said Kevin Mosher, president of Masimo Americas.
