Once again, the world's largest medical trade fair, MEDICA, broke last year's record by attracting 127,500 visitors to Dusseldorf (Germany) for this year's congress. About a quarter were international visitors, including many from Arab countries.

Products for the entire spectrum of inpatient and outpatient care were showcased in the exhibit halls by 3,637 companies from 58 countries. Major advances in ultrasound were unveiled, including compact systems for mobile use and new vascular imaging systems with unprecedented precision. Also making a debut were the world's smallest and lightest 24-hour electrocardiogram (ECG) and many other innovations in patient care.

The congress program attracted around 10,000 participants. The presentations of the World Association of Societies of Pathology and the World Congress for Laboratory Medicine, staged in tandem with MEDICA, drew a highly international audience. Also included in the congress program was the annual meeting of the German Society for Neurologic Rehabilitation and the 24th German Hospital Congress. More than 2,000 trade visitors attended events on "The hospital as business enterprise.” Also staged parallel to MEDICA was ComPaMED, the International Trade Fair for Components, Parts, and Raw Materials for Medical Manufacturing. The next MEDICA event will be held in Dusseldorf November 20-23, 2002.

"In light of current world political events, we had expected about 120,000 visitors,” said Horst Klosterkemper, president and CEO of Messe Dusseldorf, the organizer. "But we have far exceeded this target. Our exhibitors deserve a great deal of praise. Once again, their innovative strength was the magnet for an entire industry.”
