The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP; PA, USA) has opened a new 2,320 m² specialty care center at the University Medical Centre of Princeton (Plainsboro, NJ, USA).

The CHOP specialty care center at Plainsboro provides more than 16 medical and surgical specialties, including otolaryngology, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, neurology, gastroenterology, endocrinology and diabetes, plastic and reconstructive surgery services, radiology, and other traditional specialties. The facility also provides several new services and amenities, such as physical therapy, occupational therapy and rehab gyms, auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing, and diagnostic X-ray services.

CHOP physicians are on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and include a board-certified neonatologist to attend high-risk deliveries and provide care to newborns, as well as pediatric hospitalists who are available to consult on pediatric cases in the emergency center and care for their patients in the inpatient pediatric unit. The Plainsboro specialty care center location was designed to accommodate a future quadruple expansion (up to 10,000 m2) to allow for future program growth.

“We are excited to open this new state-of-the-art specialty care center on the Princeton at Plainsboro campus,” said Madeline Bell, president of CHOP. “This facility will allow us to better serve the needs of the local community and ensure families have access to the highest level of specialty pediatric care close to home.”

“The project had been in the works since 2009, when CHOP began providing care for newborns, children and adolescents at the former hospital on Witherspoon Street in Princeton,” said Barry Rabner, president and CEO of the Princeton HealthCare System. “We needed help in running our inpatient pediatric unit and providing pediatric consult services in the emergency department and taking care of kids in the neonatal intensive care unit.”

The CHOP Care Network has 50 locations in southeastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey that provide primary and specialty care services in convenient community-based locations.
