Rapid Color-Change Test Detects Pathogenic Listeria

By HospiMedica International staff writers
Posted on 24 Jul 2013
Hospital-acquired infection prevention measures that include hygiene monitoring for potential contamination by Listeria are made more efficient and cost-effective with a simple, color-change based detection kit.

SwabSURE ListeriaP from Technical Service Consultants (TSC; Lancashire, UK) is an innovative, easy to use system for presumptive detection of pathogenic Listeria from food contact and environmental surfaces. More...
The ListeriaP kit simplifies the overall surface testing process by enabling differentiation between pathogenic Listeria monocytogenes and Listeria ivanovii from other background microorganisms, including Listeria species such as Listeria innocua. The ready to use kit includes a foam swab, premoistened with a specialized neutralizing buffer, and a vial of selective media with a chromogenic substrate to reliably detect Listeria monocytogenes down to 1 CFU within 24 to 48 hours.

Users can reach into difficult areas with the 15-cm swab then use the convenient breakpoint to snap off the tip into the vial, facilitating sample collection for improved recovery of cells. TSC's unique, specially developed neutralizing buffer inactivates disinfectant residues (including QACs, phenols, peroxides, and most sanitizers) from contact surfaces, further enhancing cell recovery and accuracy of results.

The foam swab structure is designed to maximize sample release upon swab transfer into the ListeriaP medium, which also supports growth and rapid phospholipase production. The phospholipase enzyme cleaves the chromogenic substrate, providing simple and specific identification of pathogenic Listeria by simple observation of liquid medium color change from straw to turquoise. This clear visual change during incubation minimizes or even eliminates false positives (a common problem with other traditional methods) and reduces costly subculturing and further identification tests.

Each ready-to-use SwabSURE ListeriaP kit comes complete with materials for 81 tests.
