Hospital Door Handles Make Sure Hands Are Sanitary

Posted on 04 Nov 2014
Innovative hospital door handles dispense a sanitizing gel onto the hand holding them every time they are grabbed.

The Pure Hold handles work just like any other door handle, but when a person pulls the blue handle to open the door, sanitizing alcohol hand gel is automatically released through a patented release valve system into their hand. The intelligent delivery system ensures that the volume of alcohol gel delivered is always appropriate to the size of the user’s hand; this avoids inefficient and costly excess waste of the hand gel, something that is often seen with traditional gel dispensers.

The Handle is constructed of a strong stainless steel frame with a large alcohol hand gel capacity of 1,200 mL (with a reserve reservoir), reducing the likelihood of running empty even in high footfall locations. The dispensing gel is bacterial and virucidal gel for double protection. The handle can also be supplied with an additional non-gel handle section if required, so that the user has the option not to sanitize their hands. The Pure Hold Hygiene Handle is a product of Purehold (Catherington, United Kingdom), and can also be filled with an alcohol-free gel option.

“The Pure Hold Hygiene Handle is a truly exciting development in the field of infection prevention,” said Matt Richardson, head of infection prevention at Queen Alexandra Hospital (Portsmouth, United Kingdom). “The original concept, thoughtful design and simple accessibility and ease of use will provide an extremely useful tool for improving hand-hygiene compliance in any institution.”

Studies have shown that a high percentage of people do not use conventional wall-mounted dispensers because they are in too much of a rush, cannot be bothered, are not aware they should, or because the gel dispenser is empty.
