Women's Healthcare Market Flourishes, But Innovation Still Needed

Twenty-five years of unprecedented medical advancements and global recognition has increased focus on the health of women worldwide, signifying a growing market for treatments to cure those diseases that affect women most. Now thriving, the total women's healthcare market is poised to exceed US$97 billion by 2013, according to a recent report.

The estimates were compiled by medical market research publisher Kalorama Information (New York, NY, USA). Kalorama's analysts looked at disorders that affect the female reproductive system and other disorders where there was at least a 70% preponderance of women affected by the condition. The 2013 forecasted figure equates to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 9% for the period beginning in 2008, when the women's healthcare market reached almost $64 billion.

Market strength is currently attributed to several industry segments, including rheumatoid arthritis treatments in the autoimmune disease segment, antivirals in the gynecologic infections and sexually transmitted disease (STD) segment, and treatments for osteoporosis. Sustained future growth will be supported by the aging of women globally and the expected increase in product demand as new product approvals and introductions provide a greater variety of options.

In spite of the clear advancement in women's healthcare, the need for continued innovation is palpable. Kalorama Information expects the next 10 years to progressively reflect significant changes in the market for new treatments combating women's health disorders, due largely to the growing empowerment of female consumers and the rising demand for safe and effective medications and lifestyle drugs.

"There's room for improvement,” noted Bruce Carlson, publisher of Kalorama Information. "Current research has opened potential breakthroughs, creating a new era of treatment possibilities. However, in many of the disorders routinely impacting women, current product offerings are simply mediocre.”

Kalorama Information supplies the latest in independent market research in the life sciences, as well as a full range of research services.
