3-D Collagen Wound Dressing Facilitates Tissue Repair

A novel wound dressing creates a soft, conformable gel on contact with wounds, providing excellent absorption and scaffolding for cell proliferation and migration.

The C-Pro 3D Collagen wound care dressing is made of lyophilized 100% medical-grade bovine in the form of a clean, white, single layered sponge. It is intended to treat partial and full-thickness wounds of all kinds, including tunneled and undermined wounds; surgical wounds; pressure sores; low-to-moderately exuding wounds; and diabetic foot and venous leg ulcers. Made of type 1 bovine collagen, it is mechanically strengthened using a cross-linking process,, while it’s unique porous structure provides excellent absorption and scaffolding for cell proliferation and migration.

As a scaffold, C-Pro 3D allows fibroblasts to migrate across the wound bed, facilitating granulation, angiogenesis, and tissue formulations. In addition, the wound dressing is effective in activating platelets and coagulating factors, thus accelerating hemostasis. It also helps modulate aggressive proteinase digestion in the wound bed, with digested products becoming ingredients for tissue regeneration. A high exudate absorption and retention capability provides moist wound healing environment. C-Pro 3D Collagen wound care dressing is a product of DeRoyal Industries (Powell, TN, USA).

Collagen is the main structural protein of connective tissue, and is the most abundant protein in mammals, making up 25%–35% of the whole-body protein content. It is one of the body’s key natural resources and a component of skin tissue that can benefit all stages of the wound healing process. The importance of re-establishing a functional extracellular matrix (ECM) in chronic wounds has led to a renewed interest in collagen-based wound healing products, which can be applied either in the surgical or clinical setting, serving as a natural wound dressing, with properties that artificial wound dressings do not possess.
