Digital Vasculature Image Supports Access Procedures

A novel device uses near-infrared (NIR) light to create a digital image of patient vasculature that assists clinicians in finding the optimal venipuncture site.

The VeinViewer Vision2 works by projecting NIR light onto the skin, which is absorbed by the blood while reflected by surrounding tissue. The information is captured, processed and projected digitally directly onto the surface of the skin, providing a real time accurate image of the patient’s blood pattern. Patented active vascular imaging navigation (AVIN), allows clinicians to see blood patterns up to 15 mm in depth, including peripheral veins, bifurcations, and valves, as well as assess the refill/flushing of veins.

The system uses Digital Full Field (Df2) technology throughout the process. Pre-access, the VeinViewer Vision2 helps avoid problematic valves and bifurcations and find the optimal access point and vessel target that is sufficient for the length of the catheter. During-access, the real-time Df² imaging allows immediate adjustment to navigate curves, visualize a rolling vein, and observe the flush of IV fluids to determine if the catheter is flowing properly. Post-access, VeinViewer can help assess the patency of the vessel and detect a hematoma from an accidental puncture as it forms.

Customization options include changing the color of the projected image, invert or resize the image, enhance the image using a fine detail mode, increase or decrease the image brightness, or take and store a file of the image. The customization process helps clinicians to choose which mode provides the best image for their needs, as well as which mode provides the best image of a specific patient’s vasculature. The VeinViewer Vision2 is a product of Christie Medical Holdings (Memphis, TN, USA).

“Only VeinViewer can provide pre-, during, and post-access benefits throughout the entire vascular access procedure,” said George Pinho, president of Christie Medical Holdings. “It is also the only device of its kind that has been shown through clinical studies to increase both first-stick success and patient satisfaction by up to 100%, while reducing medically unnecessary PICC lines by over 30%.”
